This exhibition includes newly acquired art works by three highly acclaimed black artists: Black Female Hairstyles, a series of colourful collages by Sonia Boyce which explore the politics of black hair and black identity;
Silver Self Portrait by US artist Glenn Ligon, made from coal dust; and Go West Young Man by Keith Piper, whose work was first shown at the Gallery in the early 1980s when he was a member of the Black Arts Movement
The exhibition is supported by primary and secondary schools workshops throughout the month of October. Workshops include a tour and talk around the exhibition, followed by a practical arts activity, Or schools can book a free, self-led visit, as entry to the exhibition is free.
These artworks were acquired with support from Heritage Lotter Fund’s Collecting Cultures, the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Friends of Wolverhampton Arts and Museums.
