Dr Joshua Josh Johnson MBE
Harnessing the Power of Karate to Empower Generations
Josh Johnson was born in Jamaica and came to the UK as a teenager part of the postWindrush generation that brought new energy and culture to Wolverhampton Like many young Black men at the time he faced barriers of racism and limited opportunities but sport became both his passion and his way to rise above those challenges
From an early age Johnson had been introduced to martial arts by his father who taught him the importance of discipline selfcontrol and respect After moving to Wolverhampton he dedicated himself to formal karate training studying styles such as WadoRyu and GojuRyu which gave him a deep technical foundation Karate became more than a sport to himit was a philosophy for living built on strength of body clarity of mind and pride in identity
By the late 1970s determined to give others the opportunities he had to fight for Johnson founded the JJ Karate Academy His aim was simple but powerful to use karate not only as a martial art but as a tool for selfrespect resilience and community empowerment
Over the next fifty years Johnson transformed his dojo into one of the UKs most respected grassroots karate academies Thousands of young people passed through its doors many from Wolverhamptons AfroCaribbean community who found in his classes a safe and empowering space
His teaching style balanced rigorous discipline with encouragement Johnson expected the best from his students but also gave them the belief that they could achieve it For many the dojo became more than a training hallit was a refuge from the pressures of racism unemployment and social exclusion a place where young people could build confidence and dignity
Generations of families trained under his guidance with children parents and even grandchildren stepping onto the mat His influence stretched far beyond the dojo alumni went on to become national and international competitors local coaches teachers and community leaders who carried his values into schools workplaces and civic life
osh Johnsons own achievements as a karateka marked him out as a worldclass figure In his competitive years he fought at a high international level earning recognition as a serious contender on the global stage His technical expertise and commitment saw him steadily rise through the senior grades making him one of the most respected practitioners in Britain
1980s2000s Established himself as a senior figure in British karate promoting the art across the Midlands and mentoring new generations of instructors
2010s Recognised locally as a grand master with media describing his role in mentoring thousands of students across multiple generations
2019 Awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours for services to karate and the community presented by Prince William at Buckingham Palace This national honour recognised both his coaching excellence and his role as a mentor and community leader
2024 Achieved the rank of 9th Dan Kuban one of the highest honours in English karate Very few practitioners in the UK hold this rank cementing his place as one of the nations most senior and respected martial artists
Beyond sport Johnson has always seen himself as a community builder His commitment to keeping karate accessible was central to his mission He ran classes in community venues across the cityGraiseley Blakenhall and Woodfieldensuring training was affordable and open to all not just those with financial means
He became a visible mentor and role model for Wolverhamptons Black community By showing that discipline and focus could overcome barriers he inspired countless young people to pursue positive paths in life
In 2023 Johnson joined the board of Wolverhampton Voluntary Community Action WVCA bringing his decades of youth development experience into the wider voluntary sector This role allowed him to influence policy and support across Wolverhampton reinforcing his commitment to strengthening the citys communities from within
Dr Josh Johnsons story is not simply one of sporting success but of cultural empowerment and community resilience His karate mats became classrooms for life lessonsrespect discipline resilience and pride in heritage
Over the decades he has helped thousands of young people find confidence purpose and belonging His work has reduced the risks of exclusion and crime instead providing young people with the tools to lead succeed and contribute positively to society
By achieving both the MBE and the rare 9th Dan Johnson has brought national recognition to Wolverhampton proving that grassroots leadership can have an impact at the highest levels Yet for him the greatest legacy remains in the lives he has shaped and the community he has uplifted
